It’s September and if you aren’t back playing yet, the season is very close, and there is everything to play for. So let me tell you the #1 thing that you need to do to be successful this rugby season. Pay close attention now:
STAY ON THE FIELD.
It isn’t as sexy as world class speed, hulking strength or elite level conditioning. But the truth is that if you aren’t on the field, you aren’t going to be able to perform and you aren’t going to win anything. Even if you’re not in world beating shape, if you’re on the pitch, you have a better chance of performing than a guy who looks and trains like Hercules but can’t string together more than 10 minutes without going off hurt.
In my experience, the biggest source of non contact injuries (the ones we can 100% prevent with smart training) are top speed sprinting and changing direction- which is basically agility. Coincidentally these two training topics seem to be the most misunderstood and poorly trained by rugby players and coaches in my experience. Go figure!
I’ve already touched on the biggest speed training mistakes I frequently see rugby players make in another post (check it out here if you haven’t already seen it). Instead today I want to bring to your attention another free 30 minute video I’ve put together on my top 5 agility training secrets. If you can put these tips into practice this season, not only will you dramatically reduce your chances of suffering a preventable non-contact injury, you’ll also see a marked improvement in your on-field agility- being able to beat defenders and make your tackles more effectively. Not bad! Click on the video below to access the presentation:
